The Basic High School/Nevada
State College SBHC offers direct healthcare
services to more than 4,800 children
attending Basic High School, B. Mahlon
Brown Junior High School, C.T. Sewell
Elementary School, and Robert L. Taylor
Elementary School. The SBHC provides
acute medical services, such as: health
screenings, immunizations, sports physicals,
as well as treatment for asthma, colds,
flu, ear infections, headaches, and
migraines. Referrals are made for conditions
requiring treatment by a specialist,
such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol,
heart murmurs, diabetes, vision problems,
and dental problems.
All four schools are
located in the city of Henderson, Nevada;
which lies within the Southeast Region
of the Clark County School District
(CCSD). The Basic High School/Nevada
State College SBHC began providing healthcare
services in September 2004, and as of
this writing, has served more than 150
students. Healthcare services are currently
funded through a grant received by the
Nevada State College Department of Nursing
from the Trust Fund for Public Health.
To support the expansion
of the program, the modular building
will be placed on a site adjacent to
Basic High School on CCSD property.
The modular will include the room divisions
and plumbing specifications required
for a SBHC, including a waiting area,
two exam rooms, two offices, a laboratory
area, and a restroom.
