In November of 2006, Community and Government
Relations presented CCSD the opportunity to compete
for the "National Basketball Association
(NBA) Legacy Project," which is a project
that the NBA funds (100%) to leave behind in the
community of the NBA All-Star Game host city (which
was Las Vegas this year). The school that chose
to compete was Mabel Hoggard ES Math and Science
Magnet. On November 15th, 2006, a committee from
the NBA, as well as Facilities, Community &
Government Relations, Instruction and Technology
went to Hoggard ES to hear the proposal for the
project.
Shortly after, CCSD was notified that we were
selected to receive the funds for our project.
The project was to enhance the existing library
to house a new media center where the parents
could interact with the students, in a community
center type environment. The existing library
would be re-oriented to allow for better flow
and there would be an additional storage space
and Parents Support Center added onto the existing
building.
The project was designed and constructed with
in-house CCSD personnel (which is what made
it a very attractive project to the NBA). George
Brewer, Facility Service Representative,
was placed as manager in charge of the project
design and construction. Also, he was the "point-man"
for all communication regarding the project.
The NBA scheduled a media event at the job
site on January 19, 2007, to show construction
progress and the students interacting with the
NBA stars. This event was a success.
There was a February 17th, 2007 deadline given
to the School District, which would coincide
with the NBA All-Star Game, which took place
on Sunday, February 18th, 2007. The deadline
was achieved, and the NBA representatives were
very happy with the completed project, which
came in on-time and on-budget. Thanks to all
of the CCSD personnel that participated in this
success!
